One’s high school years can be a time of trying new things and discovering dimensions of one’s personality for the first time. There are new academic challenges, getting to know new people, participating in activities that you perhaps had not tried before and gaining new social skills. This can be a great time to challenge one’s self and begin to search and plan. Part of your self-discovery process should also include thinking AND planning your career and post-graduation educational decisions. We have put together some of our favorite and helpful internet Websites for you to explore. If you are a junior, many of these were introduced to you during our first small group meetings. These useful links can help you by…

  • Doing career assessments – providing information about your personality, likes and dislikes in a job, and discovering where you fit in the world of work;
  • Collecting useful information;
  • Narrowing your potential career choices to those you want to know more about;
  • Begin the process of planning to enter your chosen career;
  • Searching and planning for you choice of continued or higher education.
There are two publications to assist with post-secondary transition that are available through the web pages of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Division of Career Education. The descriptions and web addresses are below.From the Missouri Department of Elementary & Secondary Education (DESE):“Student Pathways to Success” presents four recommendations on improving student achievement in all Missouri high schools. These recommendations are a focus

  • on school career guidance and counseling,
  • on rigor, relevance, and relationships in school curriculum,
  • on student transitions and focus on high quality professional development.

This information can be found on the Division of Career Education webpage at http://dese.mo.gov/divcareered/ under the heading White Paper: Student Pathways to Success.

“What’s The Plan? Helping Students Explore Their Futures” is a booklet which introduces career clusters in Missouri. Career clusters is a framework to help learners of all ages prepare for the global, knowledge-based economy of today and the future. This framework will assist schools in offering programs that include differentiated academic content as well as provide a means for students to acquire credentials recognized by business and industry. These programs of study will allow for students to create their own personal plan of study based upon individual interests, abilities, and career maturity. This information can be found on the Division of Career Education webpage at http://dese.mo.gov/divcareered/ under the heading Career Clusters Booklet.
