About Griffin golf
Golf is a cut sport.  This means that we have more athletes than we have spots for on the team.  The team will be made up of approximately 22-24 players.  This breaks down to 8 to 10 varsity players, 8 to 10 Junior Varsity players and up to 6 freshman players.  There is no full freshman schedule.  We will have 4 to 6 matches for freshman as they come about.

Weather and other factors that determine if and where we play
There are some factors that, on occasion, will affect what is planned for practice and matches, namely the weather and the chance to play on a “better” course than what is originally scheduled.   The coaches will try their best to make a determination on playing on not playing in case of bad weather as early as possible, but there are times when weather rolls in right at the end of school and we have to, at the last minute ,cancel the match.

Additionally, at times, a better course becomes available during the course of the season, namely a private course versus a public course.  When that happens we will make that change.  Again, if we find out about it early enough we will let you know.  This will mostly effect the varsity team and not the lower level teams.  Not to say on occasion it won’t happen for those levels also.

Try Outs
The first two days of tryouts will be at the driving range.  After the second day we will have a group of twenty go to our course, Sunset Lakes Golf Course.  These individuals will have a nine hole match.  Their scores will be tallied and ranked from lowest score to highest score and placed on the golf information board. (Coach Owens classroom door)  The next day those twenty will go to the range and the next twenty will play the course.   Their scores will be ranked along with the first twenty.  We will continue this process until everyone trying out get at least three rounds of golf on the course.  After all golfers have had three tryouts on the course we will take the top scores for the team.  That being said there is a factor that could still prohibit some from making the squad.  According to the rules established by the Metro Catholic Conference, seniors are not allowed to play in a JV match.  So if a senior falls below the top 10 scores but still in the top 24 scores he will not make the team.

Tryouts are on the honor system.  It is your duty, if you suspect someone of cheating, to call them on it.  (i.e. not counting all strokes, or any other rule violation).

Transportation to matches and practices
Vianney does not provide transportation to matches or practices.  It is the obligation of the golfer or his parents to get him to the match and practice on time.

Matches and Practices

Sunset Lakes Golf Course in Fenton is where home matches and some practices will be contested.

Family Fun Center in Valley Park on Marshall Road is our driving range.  We will use the driving range the first week of practice, and sparingly at other times throughout the season.

There is a $5 fee per round at the course during tryout only.  There is a cost at the driving range also which is set by the driving range.  Once you have made the team there is no cost.

Physicals
Physicals must be on file in the main office before you allowed to practice.  If you have had a physical at the start of the school year, or, after Feb. 1 of the previous school year you are in compliance.
