Physical Education Program

The Physical Education program at St. John Vianney High School is designed to help each student achieve maximum development of basic physical skills, fitness, and good health habits. Furthermore, the program fosters moral, spiritual, social and cultural growth by providing guidelines and examples to help students realize and practice fair and mature judgments that are consistent with good sportsmanship, fair play and Christian values.

NOTE: All Physical Education courses are graded on a Pass/Fail basis—no grade points are earned for a passing grade. Students must pass the required courses to fulfill graduation requirements.

Course: Weight Training & Physical Fitness (PED 300) (Limited to a maximum enrollment of 30)

Prerequisite: Open to juniors and seniors Description: Activities will be designed to improve strength, flexibility, endurance and cardiovascular muscles. Individualized programs will be developed with instructor supervision. The use of free weights and the weight machines will help participants improve muscular development. General nutrition, anatomy and healthy life-style choices are covered in this course. Challenging physical demands will be made upon students. If you have a health condition, check with the department head and your physician before enrolling in this course. Also, due to the nature of this course, an instructor reserves the right to limit this course to those students truly desiring to improve their physical abilities through a regimented training program.

Course: Weight Training for Sophomores (PED 202) (Limited to a maximum enrollment of 30)

Course: Physical Education II (PED 200)

Prerequisite: Sophomore status Description: The sophomore program equips the student with the skills necessary to perform in areas of touch football, soccer, weight training, basketball, volleyball, and softball. Attention is also given to basic conditioning and physical fitness testing. First Aid is incorporated in PED 200. This course teaches students to prevent, care for, and respond to emergencies. It is based on the fundamental principles of First Aid as taught by the International Red Cross.

Course: Physical Education I (PED 100)

Description: This course gives the student an overall view of physical education, including physical conditioning with special emphasis and understanding of the development of physical potential and maintenance of satisfactory physical conditioning. Special instruction in the basic skills of football, wrestling, basketball, volleyball, soccer, track and field, softball, weight-training/plyometrics are also included in the program. Health is incorporated into PED 100. Health consists of a series of classes and discussions on relevant health topics with emphasis on the individual's development of positive health attitudes and behavior.
